The University of Wisconsin–Parkside (also known as UW–Parkside) is a four-year public university located in Kenosha and Somers, Wisconsin, in the center of the Chicago-Milwaukee Conurbation, and just two miles from the Lake Michigan shoreline. UW-Parkside is one of two universities in the UW System not named for the city in which it is located, the other being UW-Stout (following this naming convention UW-Parkside would be named UW-Kenosha). It is part of the University of Wisconsin System.[1]

The University of Wisconsin–Parkside was created by an act of the Wisconsin Legislature in 1965.[2] The University was officially founded in July 1968 when it took over two-year UW centers in Kenosha and Racine. UW–Parkside broke ground for the new campus in November 1967 and accepted its first on-site students in fall 1969. The University was an original outgrowth of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, which expanded its educational offerings to the southeastern Wisconsin region with the opening of the 4-year institution. In 1971, when the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin State Universities merged, UW–Parkside became part of the University of Wisconsin System. The University has had six permanent Chancellors: Irvin G. Wyllie (1966–74), Alan Guskin (1975–85), Sheila Kaplan (1986–93), Eleanor J. Smith (1994–97), John P. Keating (1998–2008), Deborah L. Ford (2009–present). Robert D. Felner, Dean of Education at the University of Louisville, was selected to become the Chancellor in 2008, but shortly before taking office it was revealed that he was the subject of a Federal investigation, and he resigned before ever becoming Chancellor.[3] He later pleaded guilty to nine charges, including income tax evasion.[4]
The first students graduated from UW–Parkside in June 1970. Since then, more than 17,000 students have earned degrees.
UW–Parkside is a complex of buildings with the central main buildings interconnected by an indoor walkway. The older buildings, constructed between 1967 and 1976 at a cost of more than $40 million, occupy a small portion of the 700-acre (283 ha) campus, which lies within Kenosha county. Designed by Hellmuth, Obata Kassabaum of St. Louis in the late 1960s, the beautiful, low-profile design helps the campus complex blend in with its natural surroundings. The campus is made up of 15 buildings, including Communication Arts, the Union, the Sports & Activity Center, Ranger Hall, University Apartments, and Pike River Suites. The newly renovated Student Union along with the newly constructed Pike River Suites were constructed in a manner that seamlessly blends into the existing campus. The expansion to the Communication Arts building is scheduled to be completed in time for the fall 2011 school year.
The campus has hundreds of acres of restored prairies, mature oak and maple forests and a meandering creek. The University also owns hundreds of acres of off-campus nature preserves in Kenosha and counties.
UW–Parkside is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and only NCAA Division II school in Wisconsin. Sports for men and women are offered in soccer, basketball, track, cross country and an internationally acclaimed race walking program. Men's sports are also baseball, wrestling and golf. Women's sports are also softball and volleyball.
The University has 475 All-Americans, 75 national champions, 34 academic All-Americans and four Olympians. UW–Parkside teams have recently won GLVC championships in Women's Cross Country (2007) and Women's Soccer (2008).
UW-Parkside's mascot is the Rangers which is depicted by a brown bear in a Parkside jersey named Ranger D. Bear. In January 2011 Ranger Bear had his first ever qualification for Universal Cheer Association Mascot Nationals where he took 3rd place.
